For years I’ve looked for a good buildup cleanser that is also sulfate, paraben, and silicone-free. Luckily for me, I found Devacurl’s “Buildup Buster,” a micellar water cleansing serum. It’s so good, it received the Naturally Curly Editors’ Choice Award and an E! Style Beauty Award for Best Clarifying Shampoo. I only needed a quarter-size amount of this sea scented product for a clean, happy head of curls. Also, it didn’t leave my spirals feeling stripped from its natural oils (which us curlies always run the risk of doing).
What’s in it?
This #buildupbuster contains ingredients that make this product safe for curlies who color-treat their hair. This particular one lists water, lactamide mea, glycerin, crambe abyssinica seed oil, and limonium gerberi extract as it’s first five ingredients. Other ingredients include pea protein and rosemary which helps stimulate the scalp.
Does it Help My Curls?
When first using this serum, I noticed it lists Abyssinian seed oil and jojoba esters as it’s moisturizers. I learned that seed oil is what manages unruly curls and gives it a film of shine without needing help from hair-clogging silicones. Jojoba esters act as an important hair protector by smoothing down the hair shaft. According to Devacurl, all hair textures (from 2A to 4C curls) can benefit from this cleanser.
How Much is it?
At $28 a pop, I wouldn’t call this clarifying shampoo a steal, but for the small amount you use (only a quarter-size amount each time), it lasts a long time. My 8 oz. bottle ended up lasting me a few months!
Stash it or Trash it?
Stash it! Since I didn’t use it too often, only once a week, I saved the headache of having to purchase frequently. Also, the applicator’s pointed tip targets the scalp, making it easy to apply and harder to accidentally use too much (meaning more money saved)! Overall, I would purchase again.
