When you hear “spa,” you probably think of relaxation and pampering for the body. However, in recent years, a new type of spa has become popular. Head spas, which originated in Japan, are designed to rejuvenate and remove impurities from the scalp through manual exfoliation, creating a healthier environment for hair to grow.

The salon I visited, Yukie Natori (YNNY), uses Josiane Laure’s treatment products formulated with plants from the south of France. The organic essential oils are delivered deep into the scalp and help remove sebum, detoxifying the pores, according to the brand. The scalp massage I received was not only relaxing but also supposedly helped improve blood circulation in the scalp, which can result in hair growth, something I’m in desperate need of.

Upon arriving, I received a warm greeting from the receptionist and was asked to wait in a room. After a few minutes, the stylist escorted me upstairs and began analyzing my scalp. He used a microscope to zoom in and view each hair follicle at its root. Seeing my scalp up close was both satisfying and unsettling. It resembled the landscape of a distant planet, with unfamiliar formations, aka sebum, scattered throughout!

After a quick assessment, he proceeded with the 75-minute treatment by massaging an essential oil for anti-hair loss into my scalp, followed by a deep neck and shoulder massage. I didn’t want the relaxing experience to end. As I regained awareness, I was ushered into a private room for the next part of the treatment.

A reclining shampooing bed was positioned in the center of the room, with a wash bowl at the head of the bed. Soft music filled the air, accompanied by a light, relaxing aroma. Before washing my hair, the stylist applied steam directly to my scalp to open the pores and soften the skin. Next, he cleansed my hair, massaged my scalp, and followed it up with a keratin and protein treatment. A hot towel was also placed on my neck for added relaxation. After the treatment, my scalp felt way lighter and free of debris.

Finally, the stylist led me to the blow-drying station and began drying my hair. I was worried he wouldn’t be able to manage my curls, but I was proved wrong! I observed as he skillfully brushed through my hair, creating voluminous and shiny waves. Overall, it was one of the most enjoyable birthday experiences I’ve had at a salon and is something I would do again!
