Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. So why not treat it with importance and give it a deep cleaning once in a while? I learned too late (better late than never) that the scalp can be the deciding factor between robust, healthy hair growth and limited hair growth. Lately, I’ve been watching a ton of Youtube videos (hours worth) on this topic and realized I haven’t taken scalp hair as seriously as I should have in the past. For one, I thought that because I didn’t have an oily scalp or excessive dandruff, I didn’t have to exfoliate my scalp. Maybe that’s the reason why I haven’t been able to grow my hair to my desired length?

The benefits of scalp exfoliation include:

  • Relieve irritated scalp
  • Stimulate hair follicles
  • Removal of product buildup/ dead skin cells

Since I’m so new to the game, I’ve only tried two scrubs so far, but being the product junkie that I am, I know it’s only a matter of time before more scrubs infiltrate my bathroom cabinets.

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo

CURL-worthy Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Panthenol, Tea Tree Oil, Binchotan Charcoal, Peppermint Oil, Ginger Root Oil, and Spearmint Leaf Oil.

There’s a reason why Charcoal is so popular in hair products: it’s capable of absorbing impurities as much as 100 TIMES IT’S WEIGHT. Binchotan Charcoal digs deep and unclogs the hair follicles.

Texture: The Briogeo scalp cleanser has a creamy texture. If I used too much of it, my hair became irritatingly tangled to the point where it’d take a good 15 minutes to comb through. Besides that setback, the smell of this scrub is phenomenal! It has a peppermint, coconut-y scent that is deliciously sweet.

Reason To Love It: Its soothing, grainy texture (due to the charcoal) made it easy to spread throughout my scalp.

Did It Work? Yes. It left my scalp refreshed and with a nice cooling sensation.

Would I Get Again? Yes, for sure! Although it made detangling a bit aggravating, it does its job exceptionally well…and I can’t resist its sweet scent.

Love, Beauty, Planet Sulfate-Free Shampoo Scrub with Natural Coconut Husk

CURL-worthy Ingredients: Bergamot Fruit Oil, Coconut Oil, and Bamboo Charcoal

Bamboo Charcoal helps remove bacteria and absorb unpleasant scents (in case you suffer from an odorous scalp).

Texture: Puddy. At first glance, I would’ve never guessed it’d have a slimy-like consistency. This became a problem when I tried scooping it out of its container—it simply would not budge, just like jello. To turn it into a workable texture, I had to rub it between my hands with a splash of water until it melted into a soapy consistency.

Reason To Love It: The exfoliating microbeads left my scalp feeling renewed and ready to take on new growth. It also brightened my mood with its decadent, husky aroma, courtesy of its Bergamot fruit oil.

Did It Work? Yes. It detoxed my scalp but left a bit of residue in my hair (it left my wet strands feeling a bit rough like sand). Another con? It left a trail of micro-beads throughout my hair.

Would I Get Again? Though it’s a cheap alternative to the plethora of expensive scrubs on the market, I think there are more easy-to-use scalp exfoliators out there.
